Vadso - These guns are fired each year at noon on January 21 to signal the emergence of the sun above the horizon after two months of polar darkness. It is a school holiday. The sun sets again after less than 60 minutes. |

There were several prominent radar domes in this town. During earlier days this was a post to watch the Russians about 50 miles away. Now I think they say they track space debris. |

These people in costume with flute and drum met the ship and led a long procession of passengers down the street to the fort and museum. Probably the best marketing of a museum on the cruise. |

We are now headed south and west and will visit all but one of the 34 ports of call we saw on the way to Kirkenes. Many are seen during the PM that we saw (or did not see) in the AM before. Night and day are sort of blended here. |
