Adventurers in Norway, 2004

Our Norway adventure began in Oslo. This building was only a block from our hotel. |

The Akershus Castle dated back to the 14th century. It has been burned and rebuilt several times. Formal state dinners are still held within the walls. This church is on the edge of the castle. |

This park is the site of a big celebration at the summer solstice.....many interesting statues enhance the area. |
![]() |
This monolith in Frogner Park contains 151 human bodies in interesting positions. That does not count the ones around the perimeter. This whole area would be off-bounds for American TV broadcasters. |

The train from Oslo to Myrdal runs along the ridge of the mountains. This glacier is visible from the train. |
![]() |
The Flamsbana Railway descends from 3000 feet to sea level in less than 13 miles including over 3 miles of tunnels. Along the way are many waterfalls and awesome valleys and streams. |
![]() |
The boat took us from Flam to Gudvangen through a long fjord with more waterfalls and steep rock cliffs. |
![]() |
Then rode the bus up a steep, narrow road for another spectacular view. A hotel (Stalheim) sits at the top and provides extreme luxury to go with the scenery. |
![]() |
The view of the city of Bergen from the top of the funicular that rises from near the center of town. |
![]() |
Bergen has had several destructive fires so many buildings have a variety of dates. The fire codes are very strict so the city has not had a severe fire for a long time. |

Our first view of our ship, the M/S Midnatsol, from the top of the hill. |

The following scenes are from a selection of ports on the route of the Hurtigruten (Coastal Steamer) |

The midnight sun |

Hammerfest at 05:00 AM. The reindeer are abundant in the streets. It did not appear that residents have to mow the grass. |
![]() |
Our ship in the port at Hammerfest (the northern-most town in Europe) |
![]() |
A Sami resident and one of his reindeer. The Sami are the indigenous people of Norway. |
![]() |
Nordkapp (North
Cape) This is at latitude 71 degrees, 10 minutes North. The most northern point in Europe. Behind us is north - only 1300 miles to the North Pole. |

An example of the entertainment that awaited us at several ports. |
![]() |
We visited 35 ports in each direction. All had a sign just waiting for a picture to be taken. |

The sun makes it to the Northern horizon at midnight - then starts back up and to the right (East). By noon it has gone to around to its zenith in the South. (The next night the sun would have set for the first time in two months.) |
![]() |
These cannons are at an old fortress in Vadso. They are fired once each year at noon on January 21. That is the day the sun comes above the horizon after two months in hibernation. It is a school holiday. |

This is the same town. The big radar domes were once used to watch over nearby Russia.
