The Steamboat Natchez
A good view of the paddle wheel
And the stacks
Before boarding the Calliope player entertained the crowd. When a pipe released steam a light also appeared to make quite a dramatic effect. I'm sure it must be even better after dark.
The steam engine (one of two) that drives the paddle wheel.
How the Steam Engine Works
The city fades to the rear.
This is the "water" radar that the port controller uses to watch the many ships. Much like ground control at a large airport. This port is over 20 miles long.
The Domino sugar factory. A lot of granulated sugar passes out of here.
The raw sugar on the way to the factory.
The Exxon Mobil refinery.
For those that don't choose to see the river, jazz and food are provided inside.
Or one could just watch the paddlewheel. It gets pretty repetitious after a time.
Propane and butane tanks on a barge
A empty freighter waiting to take on its load.
When a ship crew wants to go ashore, a water taxi is available. That's the small boat on the lower left.
Lots of barges
The United States Naval Base.
