New Orleans

My second walking tour was through the Garden District and one of the many above ground cemeteries. Because N.O. is at or below river level the dead are buried above ground.

My guide is Bill Murphy.

Because New Orleans is at or below river level the dead are buried above ground.

This is a public cemetery. The less financially gifted are buried here. This is actually the back of the wall around the cemetery.

Typical house in the Garden District. Lots of gardens and wrought iron rails.
Jefferson Davis died in one of the houses here. Some think his ghost is still hanging around.
Another home.
Our tour guide, Muriel, for a van ride around the city. The narrative was bilingual - French and English. She did an impressive performance of driving and talking for over 3 hours.
This is St. Louis #1 - a religious cemetery.
A free (to pedestrians)  public ferry across the River to the town of Algiers.
At the Mardi Gras Museum many of the floats and characters for the Mardi Gras parades are contructed.
Here we see workers making modifications. They used to be made of paper mache, but now mostly stryrofoam.
Quite a collection of characters. Most are available for rent in parades all over the country.
A statue of Sachmo stands near the ferry landing in Algiers.
The ferry returns to the city.
A statue of immigrants to New Orleans.....on the river side is a lady reaching out.
