Volcanoes in Iceland

There are more than 200 volcanoes in Iceland. We saw or visited many of the accessible ones.

Mt. Hekla - a very active volcano, which last erupted in 2001. It is often shrouded in clouds but cleared away for us to view

This volcano, Eldfell, is located in the Westmann Islands just off the southern coast of mainland Iceland.

The view from the top of the volcano looking toward the town. The houses were in the black area in the center. The rest of the town was covered with up to 6 feet of ash.

Herdubreid - "Queen of Iceland's Mountains" - formed by a volcano erupting under the glacier, hence the flat top. At the top is a shield volcano filled with ice.

Over 5000 ft (1682 m)

Shield volcano near Herdubreid. Doesn't look like much. but a great deal of lava flowed from here.

Inside the caldera of the volcano Askja. The little crater, Viti, is dwarfed by the caldera lake beyond.

This lake in the major caldera of Askja is the deepest lake in Iceland (220 m ; 660 ft) and 1050 m in altitude (3100 ft)

Even though we walked through a snow storm over a snow field to get there, several people were wading in the crater. The water is about 90 degrees F.
