Obama Inauguration - 2009

Pre-Inauguration Celebration: We Are One

January 18, 2009

On Sunday, January 18, 2009 I went to Washington, DC along with a few others to experience the pre-inauguration celebration in honor of President-Elect Barack Obama.

The following photos show more of the places and the people who came to share in the excitement this Sunday......

There are 8000 of these treasures available for immediate use.

The current resident will spend his last two nights here.

For a lot of people it is a time to watch and wonder

Buttons and flags and hand warmers were abundantly available from eager vendors.

Some people were creative about finding viewing spots.

The show is over and it is time for everyone to go home at the same time....

Although the news reports talked constantly about the problems getting there and being there, I had a seat in both directions on the Metro, met some delightful people along the way, and I could see and hear the show (on the huge TV screens). I have been to made for TV productions at the Capitol, and I know enough to stay out of the close-in areas since the audience can seldom see past the stage equipment. I found it much more fun to be part of the crowd watching from a distance.

Once the Secret Service relaxed the security restrictions, I went down closer to see Mr. Lincoln. The "security people" were still in clear view on top of the Memorial.

A great and unusual view of the Capitol and the Washington Monument. They are quite a 1.2 miles (2 km) apart in real life.

As darkness falls the Monument comes to life.

In two more days two million people are expected to come back to welcome the new president.
