Quarry Two
February 20
On the road between Chittorgarh and Kota

A short distance after the first stop we realized that the quarries were getting larger and larger so we stopped again. This quarry was huge - at least 1000 feet across and several times that wide. Someone told us that at least 5 separate stone cutting companies worked the quarry at the same time. From our vantage point on the hill above we could see many aspects of the process ranging from initial earth moving, to blasting, cutting, lifting,  and trucking it all out.

There were many women doing some serious lifting and carrying - often in the large bowls on their heads.

The men also did some heavy lifting

It appears that not many tourists make this stop. At one point Joyce had 15 young men just standing around looking at her and making small conversation while I watched the quarry with binoculars and the camera.

Soon we saw many trucks with crates of slate ......

and large blocks ---- all heading down the mountain or to huge staging areas nearby.
