Three Gorges Cruise
China
September 22, 2005
Part 1

We cruised up the Yangtze River from Yichang to Chongqing on the Victoria Katarina. This river ship has about 266 passengers; it is the largest and newest in the Victoria fleet. Our trip took up first to a dam built in the 1980's (don't know the name). At our starting point in Yichang the River level in 44 meters (145 ft) above sea level. We passed through one set of locks at the dam and rose about 73 feet to 66 meters (218 ft) above sea level. While this dam is certainly large, it does not even get mentioned in the Three Gorges Cruise brochures. I found the context of this initial dam interesting and so include it here. We get to the actual Three Gorges Dam in the next page.
