Great Wall
of China
Beijing, China
September 15, 2005
When we think about China, the Great Wall usually comes to mind so no trip to China would be complete without a trip to the Great Wall. Actually the Chinese words for the Great Wall translate literally to "Long Wall". It is about 4163 miles long from the Western to Eastern part of the country; it is about 2000 years old. Our tour operator suggested we visit a more ancient part of the wall to get a sense of realism rather than restoration. We rode by bus to the outskirts of Beijing to reach the remnant of the wall seldom visited by tourists. We were indeed the only people there, although a group of Chinese visitors did arrive as we were leaving. After our visit to the old wall, we visited a restored "tourist section" to get some perspective. The difference was dramatic.
